2018 Alumni-Student Knowledge exchange (ASKe) Conference

Thursday, April 19th and Friday, April 20th, the Instructional Systems & Learning Technologies (ISLT) program at Florida State University (FSU) hosted the 2018 Alumni-Student Knowledge exchange (ASKe).

This is the event of the year that faculty, staff, students, and alumni all look forward to each year. It allows both Master's and Doctoral students to connect with alumni and learn from one another. This is one of the many features that makes the ISLT program so unique.

Thursday evening, students, alumni, and faculty met at the FSU Alumni Center for some hors d'oeuvres, drinks, socializing, and an awards ceremony.

Friday, a series of events were hosted.

Check-in, Continental Breakfast

Attendees checked-in and continental breakfast was available while attendees networked with each other.

Knowledge Exchange

A "speed dating" style workshop that paired students and alumni for a direct networking experience. Prompts were provided to each participant to start the conversation if needed, and participants were rotated every few minutes as directed allowing each participant to network with five other attendees.

Design Challenge

Students were presented with five different human performance improvement needs to select from which were provided by alumni. Students met with the alumni who presented the problem they selected and worked with the other students in the group to come up with a solution for their "client" to solve their "human performance need." Groups of students then presented their solutions. An expert panel of "judges" then provided feedback based on the solutions and observations presented by each group.

Lunch & Learn  @ Coffee Cafe

Alumni, students, and faculty presented five minute overviews of effective organizational, performance support, communication, and authoring tools.

Panel Discussion: Project Management

A panel of experts with over 100 years of experience combined told stories and answered questions about what it is like to manage instructional design projects.

Wrap-Up Session

Dr. Klein and doctoral student Demetrius give closing remarks, provide program updates, discuss the post-conference survey, and encourage a group picture before heading to a local restaurant to close out the event for those who are able to attend.

Congratulations! Kesia Milner (ISLT MS Graduate) Chosen as Teacher of the Year for Bay District Schools

Congratulations to Kesia Milner, one of FSU ISLT MS graduates (2014). Kesia was chosen as the 2016 Teacher of the Year for Bay District Schools.
Bay District Schools gives one teacher the award each year. Each school picked one teacher to represent them and more than 34 teachers from all over the county were nominated for this year. Among the five finalists, the award went to Kesia Milner, Springfield Elementary School's art teacher. The ceremony was held at the Edgewater Resort Conference Center on last Tuesday night (Photo).

"They're very, very important for the whole child to be educated and for the child to really be happy and have an outlet, (...) and with all the testing that we have that's mandated, a lot of kids feel a lot of pressure and I feel like the outlet is in the arts," she said at the Teacher of the Year Interview.

Make a Donation and Support our Program & Students

The instructional systems and learning technologies program at Florida State University (ISLT@FSU) is seeking contributions to be used in direct support of our students. Thanks to the generous donations of several alumni and faculty, we are able to fund scholarships, assistantships, stipends, and conference travel for students.

Next month, 13 ISLT students are scheduled to present their work at the 2015 AECT conference in Indianapolis. In fact, four of these students will participate as finalists in the PacificCorp Design Competition. We estimate it will cost each student $750 - $1,000 to attend the AECT conference (airfare, hotel, conference registration). However, the ISLT program can cover a third of these expenses for each student.

Please consider making a donation by following the steps outlined below.

1. GO to https://one.fsu.edu/foundation/donate/give-online.

2. SELECT the link “More Designations” in the middle of the page.

3. TYPE F07631 in the field labeled Fund # and then hit search. The following search result should appear at the bottom of the page (you may have to scroll down to see it):
  Instructional Systems Student Support Fund
  F07631
  Education

4. SELECT the link “Instructional Systems Student Support Fund”

5. The correct fund should now appear on the donation form. Please be sure the designation is for the Instructional Systems Student Support Fund (F07631)

6. COMPLETE the rest of the fields in the form. Note that the Tribute Information is optional.

7. CLICK the NEXT button at the bottom of the page after you have completed the form and follow the directions provided.

Thanks for your continued support of our program and students! Feel free to forward this message to others in your network.

Submit your news or accomplishments to the ISLT newsletter, today!

Reminder!

Dr. Shute and I are currently working on putting together this year's ISLT newsletter, which will be sent out sometime this Fall. There are two sections of this newsletter that we need your help with though.
The Alumni News & Accomplishments and Student News & Accomplishments sections highlight what our alumni and students have accomplished in the past year.

If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with our ISLT community (e.g., awards, publications, presentations, promotions, pictures), please send them to me (grm13@my.fsu.edu) by August 3 at the latest (earlier is better).

Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

Thanks

Photos: AAC meeting and Mini Simulations 2015

Last Thursday and Friday, ISLT AAC Meeting & Mini Simulation was held at Stone Building on campus. Many alumni, faculty members, and students were there and had a great time. Here are some photos. To see more photos, visit our facebook group, FSU Instructional Systems.

Last Friday morning. Before the mini simulations started, we had the pleasant chats while enjoying delicious food. It was so nice to see all current and past students at the same place.

After breakfast, all of us headed to the main room to learn about the program. Dr. Klein and Dr. Cathy Tencza, one of our alumni, introduced us this event. We split into some small groups and had a great time to learn the speakers' experience now working on diverse Instructional Systems related fields.

Here are the list of topics and speakers at the mini-simulations. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.
  • Developing a High-Profile Project Timeline: Sue Ebbers, Ph.D., CEO, Luminessence Change by Design
  • It's a Dilemma: Amy Farrington, Director of Certification, Florida Certification Board
  • Improving Performance: An Ecosystem Approach to Upskilling: Doretta Gordon, Learning and Development Manager, State Farm Insurance Companies & Jonathan Hamilton, Learning Technologies Analyst, State Farm Insurance Companies
  • Working in a Full Time Virtual Academic Position: Guiding and Mentoring: Judy Converso, Ph.D., Full Time Graduate School Dissertation Chair, Northcentral University
  • One System, Many Users: Upskilling Them All: Cathy Tencza, Performance Consultant, Tencza Designs
  • Data is the Answer: What was the Question?: Kathy Ingram, Ph.D., Assistant Dean of Curriculum, Kaplan University
  • Avoiding Rejection: Targeting Interventions for Maximum Effectiveness: Gwynn Grandy, SR, Training Manager, AT&T University
  • When the Solution Comes First: Gabrielle Gabrielli, Ph.D., President and CEO, Gabrielle Consulting, Inc.
  • Professionalizing Foster Care: Improving Practices and Outcomes. Lisa Wubbena, Instructional Design Consultant.

After the invited State Farm presentation, the day came to an end with the ISLT Alumni Advisory Council Meeting. Many alumni, some students, and all faculty members discussed many ways to contribute to our program for over four hours.
This two-day event was a success and we all had a great opportunity to create a professional network and gain precious experience that can guide us towards our aspirations!

Outstanding students and alumni honored at our annual award banquet.

Last Thursday, several outstanding students and alumni were honored at the Student Award Ceremony held at the University Center Club on campus. It was on the first day of AAC meeting & Mini Simulation.

The awards not only recognize the work and services of these students and alumni, but provided monetary awards as well. A total of six graduate students and two alumni were recognized for their work and services this year.

Alison Moore, a doctoral candidate, was honored with the Outstanding Doctoral Student Award. Fabrizio Fornara, a doctoral candidate, was recognized with the Outstanding International Student Award and the Outstanding Service Award. The Outstanding Master Student Award recognizes excellence in their work and Sarah Hill was the recipient. Edwin Owen Williams was also the recipient of the Outstanding Distance Learning Student Award. The two doctoral students were honored with the Future Professor Awards and they were Jiyae Bong and Greg Moore. Dr. Jeeheon Ryu was also honored with the  Outstanding Alumnus Award. The recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Service Award was Dr. Suzanne J. Ebbers. The other students who had been nominated for one of the awards received their certificates.
