Spring Seminar Series: March 31th: Dr. Jonathan Adams on Usable Design

Dear ISLT faculty, students and alumni,

Please mark your calendar: March 31 from 12:00-1:00 pm EST in Morgan Studio, Dr. Jonathan Adams will be giving a lecture on Usable Design. You will explore the basics of Learner Experience design, the user-centered design and testing techniques that are important to this field of work. A group of FSU ISLT students, alumni, and faculty will be gathering in the Morgan Studio to watch this interactive event in person.

Seminar this Friday - Two Fantastic Sessions

Welcome back from the long weekend! This Friday we will have two seminars. Both will be located in the Morgan Studio. I hope you will be able to attend both because they are TRULY going to be fantastic sessions.

1. Lee Rainie, Director of Pew Internet & American Life Project. 10:30-11:30

Lee will be joining us virtually to talk about his new book (with Barry Wellman), Networked: The New Social Operating System. This book gives an interesting glimpse into how we function as networked individuals in all spheres of our lives. And the Pew Internet & American Life Project is truly an amazing effort to survey the American people about their technology habits/use. If you've never checked it out, you should.

Topic: Lessons Learned from Ten Years’ Design Research on

Case-based e-Learning for Real-World Problem Solving

One of the essential goals in higher education is to help students to be able to deal with real-world problems, which are characterized as complex, dynamic, and uncertain, and which require students’ scientific knowledge, reflective decisions, and professional commitments. In order to find ways to enhance college classroom learning for real-world problem solving, a series of educational design research projects on case-based e-learning has been conducted over the last ten years through interdisciplinary collaborations with leading educators in the areas of human medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, and teacher education (http://elearning.coe.uga.edu). Sharing candid stories about failures and successes from the studies, this presentation will portray how an initial theoretical idea has evolved, struggled, and been refined through small-scale studies, and finally has been expanded to gain the potential to make a significant impact on larger-scale curriculum changes. Further discussion on the role of educational technology researchers in balancing theory and practice will be facilitated.

This Friday, Dr. John Keller, Emeritus Professor of Instructional Systems. will be talking about motivation. His classes on motivation were always popular and Dr. Keller is internationally known for the ARCS Model of motivation -- you won't want to miss this seminar!

The IS seminar for this Friday, March 16th, is on Stealth assessment in Crayon Physics Deluxe by Val Shute. This presentation will describe some 21st century competencies, as well as illustrate an approach to pull out information directly from gameplay to make inferences about players’ creativity, persistence, and conceptual physics understanding.

Kirk Fleming: NEW Seminar Speaker - Tuesday 2/28

We have been presented with a wonderful opportunity to have an alum present a seminar. 

Kirk Fleming, MS Alum, will present on Tuesday, February 28 from 2-3 pm in the Morgan Studio.

His topic: Blending West and East:  Building a Learning & Development department in modern day China

Kirk lives and works in China now, serving as the Director of Learning & Development for ReSource Pro (www.resourcepro.com). He has sponsored summer internships for our students.

Seminar Speaker: Bob Reiser

Dr. Bob Reiser will present on Ten Trends Affecting the Field of Instructional Design and Technology this Friday (9/23). 

The presentation will be from 12:00-1:30pm (Please note that this seminar will last 1.5 hours).

Not only is Dr. Reiser a faculty member in our department, he is now the Associate Dean of Research for the College of Education. If you didn't have the pleasure of having Dr. Reiser teach one of your courses, take this time to meet Dr. Reiser and learn about top trends in IDT. If you know Dr. Reiser and have taken one of his classes, then you know what a great seminar this will be!

First Fall IS Seminar Speaker: Doretta Gordon, PhD 9/9/2011

Please join us for the first IS seminar of the 2011-2012 school year. It will be Friday, September 9th.

Seminar is an event for the whole IS community. Seminar speakers share their experiences in the field as both practitioners and researchers. The faculty encourage students to attend seminar  not only to learn more about the happenings in the field but to take time to get know others in the program. Seminar is streamed online for our online students. Doretta is an IS @ FSU alum, and she works for Southwest Research Institute where she is the Director of the Emerging Training and Performance Technologies Department. The seminar topic will be Expert Knowledge Transformation. "We depend on the experts in our organizations.  But what happens when they walk out the door, taking all that valuable wisdom with them?  Loss of expert knowledge has crippled organizations, causing them to have to recreate or rebuild their corporate advantage. Expert Knowledge Transformation is a 5-step process to proactively capture the tacit wisdom and turn it into valuable learning content to build up the workforce and extend the corporate ROI."
