APATMS (Technology, Mind, and Society) Conference

April 5-7 in Washington D.C.

The APATMS (Technology, Mind, and Society) conference is hosted by APA (American Psychology Association) and ACM (association for computing machinery) and serves as a kind of special interest group meeting specific to the field of artificial intelligence, virtual or mixed reality, and data mining (or learning analytics) issues.

ISLT professor Dr. Fengfeng Ke and ISLT doctoral student Jewoong Moon (Jay) will be presenting on the effect of virtual-reality based social skill training for autistic children. The study was a single-subject design research to review how autistic children behave and their social skills across different types of social settings in VR. Follow updates about this conference using hashtag #APATech18.

Over the last few weeks, a few events have taken place and a few more that are right around the corner that you may be interested in.

Dr. Klein's class using and Press the Chest (a CPR training kit)

Dr. Klein's Advanced Instructional Design and Development class using principles of learning theory, early instructional theory, and communication/media theory to analyze "Press the Chest" (a CPR training kit).

Open Access Publishing Presentation

On Friday, March 2, Florida State Library's scholarly communication librarian, Devin Soper presented in Dr. Dennen's Academic Publishing EME6635 class. A few key points are listed below as well as a link to his presentation.

• Library expenses are increasing and forcing subscriptions to some journals to be discontinued and or reevaluated while the profits of a publisher have been known to recently exceed the profits of Google

Three of Florida State University’s online programs placed in the top 10 and five graduate programs in the top 20, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 Best Online Programs.

FSU College of Education’s online graduate program continues to rank among the best in the nation at No. 3. FSU Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies is one of the online programs the college offers.

Congratulations! Dr. Dennen received Transformation Through Teaching Award!

 

Dr. Vanessa Dennen has been received the Transformation Through Teaching award.

Transformation Through Teaching is a program established through the Spiritual Life Project to honor full-time faculty that have had an intellectual, inspirational, and integrative impact on the lives of their students.

Dr. Dennen was nominated for her transformational role in her students' academic life and was selected by the Spiritual Life Project on the basis of her students' compelling stories.

Congratulations! We have two PacifiCorp Finalists teams, this year!

Please join us in congratulating four of our doctoral students, Logan Arrington, Zhichun (Lukas) Liu, Zhaihuan Dai, and Nurullizam Jamiat for being selected as the finalists teams in PacifiCorp competition sponsored by AECT.

Each year, PacifiCorp and Design and Development Division of AECT offers the PacifiCorp Design and Development Award Competition. Teams of graduate students are invited to design and develop a solution in response to a performance problem in adult learning and performance-improvement settings. This year, three teams were invited to present their performance improvement solutions at the final phase of competition at AECT’s annual Convention in November.

For those of you who are attending the upcoming AECT conference, please schedule to attend the presentation and support our two teams!

Photos: ISLT Master's Orientation, Last Thursday!

Last Thursday afternoon, we had our program orientation for new master students at Morgan. After having a great time of getting to know each other through an icebreaker activity, Jiyae Bong, a vice president of ISSA (Instructional Systems Student Association), introduced the ISSA group and upcoming social events. Sue Ebbers, one of our alumni, also visited and talked about Alumni Advisory Council & Mentorship program. At the end, Dr. Klein, Dr. Dennen, Dr. Darabi, and Dr. Ke shared information related to their master's degree career. This orientation was organized by Diana Martin, a master student, and Dr. Klein. It was a wonderful time to welcome our new master students together. We also had another orientation for online master students at 8 pm and Dr. Jeong and Dr. Ke were online to welcome our online students.

Last Thursday and Friday, ISLT AAC Meeting & Mini Simulation was held at Stone Building on campus. Many alumni, faculty members, and students were there and had a great time. Here are some photos. To see more photos, visit our facebook group, FSU Instructional Systems.

Last Friday morning. Before the mini simulations started, we had the pleasant chats while enjoying delicious food. It was so nice to see all current and past students at the same place.

After breakfast, all of us headed to the main room to learn about the program. Dr. Klein and Dr. Cathy Tencza, one of our alumni, introduced us this event. We split into some small groups and had a great time to learn the speakers' experience now working on diverse Instructional Systems related fields.

After the invited State Farm presentation, the day came to an end with the ISLT Alumni Advisory Council Meeting. Many alumni, some students, and all faculty members discussed many ways to contribute to our program for over four hours.
This two-day event was a success and we all had a great opportunity to create a professional network and gain precious experience that can guide us towards our aspirations!
