ISLT Faculty Conference Travels, Summer 2015

Professor Val Shute

Dr. Shute to Present at Conference in Australia

Dr. Valerie Shute will share her research on Stealth assessment in video games at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) 2015 Research Conference. The annual meeting theme will be "Learning assessments: Designing the future" and it will take place on August 16-18 in Melbourne, Australia.

In the presentation, she will explore how games can use stealth assessment to measure and support the learning of critical 21st century competencies. Also, she will share some examples within the context of a game called Physics Playground that she designed and developed with her team.

*Dr. Shute is the Mack and Effle Campbell Tyner Endowed professor in Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems (ISLT). In April, she received a 2015 Graduate Student Mentor Award.

Dr. Dennen Presented at Conference in China


Dr. Vanessa Dennen was invited as one of four featured speakers at the AECT (Association for Educational Communications and Technology) - LKAOE (Learning and Knowledge Analytics in Open Education) 2015 Summer International Research Symposium. It took place on June 16- 19 in Shanghai, China.

In her presentation, she highlighted some of the ways that analytics can be used to help better understand the interactions that take place among learners in an online setting. Also, she discussed uses ranging from modeling interactions to formative and summative assessments.

She also provided two preconference workshops. The topics were (1) Social Media MOOCs for Professional Development and (2) Badges, Credentials, and Other forms of assessment.

Dr. Ke Presented at Conference in Sweden

Image result for fengfeng keDr. Fengfeng Ke shared her study, 'Immersive Simulation on Collaborative Learning about a Complex Dynamic Systems' at the International Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning. The annual meeting theme was "Exploring the material conditions of learning: Opportunities and challenges for CSCL." And it took place on June 7-11 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

She examined the effect of Astronaut Challenge, an immersive, flight-simulation-based learning program, on the collaborative learning process and science knowledge development of ninth grade students.
